Location

Flying

Costa Rica has two main international airports – Juan Santa maria International Airport in San Jose,  and Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia,  with regular international air access.  (Please note that there are no direct flights from Liberia into Tambor, you would need to make a stop at San José.)

Casa-Chameleon We can also arrange for charter regional planes or helicopters upon request.

Mal País/Santa Teresa is a scenic 45-minute drive from the Tambor airport. You can choose from picking up a previously arranged rental car at the Tambor airport (let us know if need rental car arrangements), taking a taxi, or reserving a private driver.

Driving

From San José to the hotel: A four to five hour drive (depending on the route and including the Ferry) split in half by a ferry ride across the spectacular Golfo de Nicoya.

From Liberia, travelers can either

  1. Take the “Interamericana Highway” down to Puntarenas and from there take the ferry to Paquera (across Golfo de Nicoya) and drive to Mal País.
  2. Or drive to Nicoya and once there follow the road to Carmona, Lepanto, Jicaral, Naranjo, Paquera, Cobano and finally to Mal País. This area has a lot of unpaved roads, it is recommended to drive it only during the dry season (Nov. to May)  and with 4×4 automobiles. We do not encourage our guests to drive on these roads during the rainy season (May to Nov.).

Driving Directions

From San José

  1. Take the San Jose–Caldera Highway #27 leading towards Santa Ana. You must stay on this highway for approximately 70 minutes (45 miles) following towns: Escazu, Guachipelin, Santa Ana, Belen, Ciudad Colon, Guacima, Turrucares, Atenas, Orotina, Jaco and Tivives. Get off this highway by turning right towards Puntarenas, keep driving until you reach downtown Puntarenas, once there follow the signs to the Paquera Ferry.
  2. “Take the Pan-American Highway # 1 via Palmares, San Ramon, Esparza, towards Puntarenas (approximately 2 hours). Go to downtown Puntarenas and follow the map signs to reach the Paquera Ferry Boat.”

The ferry ride takes about one and a half hours. Once in Paquera drive towards Tambor and then Cobano. Continue through Cobano follow the signs to Mal País. Turn left on the main road at Mal País, Casa Chameleon is about on kilometer down the road to your left (there will be a sign pointing out the turn-off to the hotel from the main road).

From Liberia, travelers can either

  •  Take the “Interamericana Highway” down to Puntarenas and from there take the ferry to Paquera (across Golfo de Nicoya) and drive to Mal País.

This area has a lot of unpaved roads, it is recommended to drive it only during the dry season (Nov. to May) and with 4×4 automobiles. We do not encourage our guests to drive on these roads during the rainy season (May to Nov.) and it is usually a wise idea to have a GPS.
