Situated approximately 20 miles from the city of Liberia, Costa Rica,  Playas del Coco town is one of the oldest beach town. As it has close proximity to the capital of Guanacaste, it has has historical importance. In Costa Rica, Playas del Coco is one of the more popular beach towns for both locals and tourists. This beach town is popular for being a family friendly town and favorite party place for the holidays. The area is full of nightlife and fun activities. It used to be a small fishing town in the past decade but later grown immensely a little beach town.

The way to Playas del Coco:

To reach the Playas del Coco area, it takes a 25 minute drive from its closest airport Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia. From the airport you can choose from different ways to reach the town.

By Shuttle:

If you want to choose more convenient and comfortable way, you can travel by shuttle service. It will cost $50 for one to four people.

By Car:

After lending at the LIR, you can also rent a car and drive to the Coco from the airport. It is very easy and straight forward way.

By Bus:

From the airport you can take a public bus (the Pulmitan de Liberia) and by spending 550 colones for one way, you can reach the town. This bus usually runs from 5 am to 7 pm in every hour.

By Taxis:

After reaching the airport, you will find different types of taxis standing outside the airport. If you travel by taxi, you will have to spend around $50 to 60. It is recommended to hire the official red ones rather than the private taxis or the orange one.

Accommodations:

In this town you will find an abundance of accommodations. There are also budget hotels for the travelers to help them save a little money. Travelers who are planning to explore the general Guanacaste province, they can choose the base camp option. This town also offers beachfront hotels are affordable usually under $90 per nights. National & Private Parks and Wildlife Refuge:

Guanacaste National Park:

This hotel can be reached with a one and a half drive from Playa del Coco. This park is adjacent to the Santa Rosa National Park. Guanacaste National Park, with its Eighty Six acre area, is home to different species of wild animals of mountain cloud forest and also from lowland dry forest. This park is framed by two volcanoes Cacao and Orosi.

Lomas de Barbudal Wildlife Refuge:

From Playa del Coco, Lomas de Barbudal Wildlife Refuge can be reached just within one and a half hours. With its 6,500 acre area, this refuge is protecting the valuable mahogany and rosewood trees. About 200 different species of birds and 250 species of bees live in this refuge area. It is a perfect place to be visited by wild and nature lovers, bird watchers and wildlife researchers.

Palo Verde National Park:

PaloVerdeRocaview Situated just over an hour and a half’s drive from Playa del Coco, Palo Verde National Park has 45,500 acre. Caballero Wildlife Refuge is also included in that area. This park is ideal for the bird watchers as it is found that there are more than 300 different species of birds.

Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park:

With its dry forest on slope of the Pacific, this park is situated 60 km from Playa del Coco. It has several trails leading to  the thermal springs, waterfalls, rivers and also show the bubbling of the active volcano.

Santa Rosa National Park:

starosanatlpark From the Playa del Coco, Santa Rosa National Park is just 76 km away and you can reach it by driving for only one hour. Its 122,350 acre area is home to 10 unique habitats and it includes dry forest and also mangrove swamp.

Weather:

During the dry season, the sun remains quite strong and intense in Playas del Coco. It can stay between 90 – 100 Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) and above for weeks. In Costa Rica this area is known as one of the hottest and driest places as the dry season stays longer in this area. Usually rainfall don’t begins constantly until around August with October as these are the peak rainy month. In this area, rainy season remains for shorter period of time so people experience droughts and water shortages constantly.

Playas del Coco Beach:

Lies within the Gulf of Papagayo and stretches 3 kilometers from point to point, Coco beach is not a surfing beach but has a variety of fish species that make it a popular fishing spot. Its water is not quite as blue as you will find in other beaches in Guanacaste rather its water seems more blue-grey than blue-green and its sands have a dark grey-brown color. Coco beach water is perfectly suitable for swimming and bathing.
