Playa del Coco Town


Situated approximately 20 miles from the city of Liberia, Costa Rica,  Playas del Coco town is one of the oldest beach town. As it has close proximity to the capital of Guanacaste, it has has historical importance. In Costa Rica, Playas del Coco is one of the more popular beach towns for both locals and tourists. This beach town is popular for being a family friendly town and favorite party place for the holidays. The area is full of nightlife and fun activities. It used to be a small fishing town in the past decade but later grown immensely a little beach town.

The way to Playas del Coco:

To reach the Playas del Coco area, it takes a 25 minute drive from its closest airport Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia. You can get to the town of Playa del Coco from the airport by a variety of ways.

By Bus:

Public bus runs from Liberia to Coco multiple times a day that costs 550 colones one way.

By Shuttle:

If you want to choose the most convenient and comfortable way, you can also travel by a shuttle that costs $50 for 1 to 4 people.

By Car:

After lending at the LIR, you can also rent a car and drive to the Coco from the airport. It is very easy and straight forward way.

By Taxis:

After reaching the airport, you will find many taxis outside the airport that costs around $50 to 60. While hiring, make sure to tale the official red ones rather the orange or pirate taxis.

National Parks, Private Parks and Wildlife Refuge:

Guanacaste National Park:

This hotel can be reached with a one and a half drive from Playa del Coco. This park is adjacent to the Santa Rosa National Park and its 86,000-acre area is home to several habitats from lowland dry forest to mountainous cloud forest. Two volcanoes – Orosi and Cacao – frame the park.

Lomas de Barbudal Wildlife Refuge:

From Playa del Coco, Lomas de Barbudal Wildlife Refuge can be reached just within one and a half hours. It is a tranquil wildlife refuge that helps to protect endangered rosewood and mahogany trees. With its 6,500 acre area, this refuge is home to 250 bee species as well as 200 bird species. It also has a small network of hiking trails.

Palo Verde National Park:

Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park:

This park is situated 60 km from Playa del Coco. Its trails show off the active volcano’s power with bubbling mud pits, thermal springs, rivers and waterfalls and all of these are surrounded by dry tropical forest on the Pacific slope.

Santa Rosa National Park:

starosanatlparkFrom the Playa del Coco, Santa Rosa National Park is just 76 km away and it takes only an hour drive. Its 122,350 acre area is home to 10 unique habitats, ranging from mangrove swamp to dry tropical forest.

Local People:

In the town of Playas del Coco, you will meet very friendly people who are proud to be Guanacastecos and they call themselves “coqueños” that means from Coco.


During the dry season, the sun remains quite strong and intense in Playas del Coco. It can stay between 90 – 100 Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) and above for weeks. The Coco area is known as one of the driest and hottest places in Costa Rica as it has a longer dry season. Until around August with October as the peak rainy month, it generally doesn’t start raining constantly. This area constantly experiences water shortages and droughts due to the dryness and shorter rainy season.

Health & Security:

There is a public clinic ‘Ebais’ in Playas del Coco. In the town there is also a private clinic called ‘Coco Medical Center’. There is also one main veterinarian clinic in town in Pueblito Norte of Las Palmas, Veterinaria Dra.Sharine Alice.

Right in front of the beach by the park there is a police station where you can ask for help in case you experience any kind of trouble.

Playas del Coco Beach:

Lies within the Gulf of Papagayo and stretches 3 kilometers from point to point, Coco beach is not a surfing beach but has a variety of fish species that make it a popular fishing spot. Its water is not quite as blue as you will find in other beaches in Guanacaste rather its water seems more blue-grey than blue-green and its sands have a dark grey-brown color. Coco beach water is perfectly suitable for swimming and bathing.
