Montezuma Waterfall

montezuma-waterfall From the village center with a 15-20 minute hike you can reach this “Montezuma Falls”. It is a high and very beautiful waterfall that tumbles from a height of 24 meters and feeds a large natural pool for swimming. Above it are two more pools that you can hike to from below by scaling the cliff using a rope and climbing on tree roots, or you can walk up the paved road and pay 2000col to enter at Suntrails Canopy Tour entrance, which is much safer and easier. Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve

Situated 9 km south of Montezuma, Cabo Blanco is the oldest nature reserve of Costa Rica. Established in 1963 even before the park’s inception in 1970, this park a popular tourist destination for tourists who visit Montezuma and Santa Teresa.

Romelia Wildlife Refuge

Also known as Playa Grande of Montezuma, Romelia Wildlife Refuge is known in spanish as “Refugio Mixto de Vida Silvestre Romelia” (RMVSR). The size of this refuge is 156.3 Hectares, or 386.4 acres, and includes the land from 50 meters behind the high tide line. This is a gorgeous beach with no development, a 30 minute walk to the north of town.

Playa Grande

Neighboring towns

Cabuya

Cabuya is just to the south of Montezuma along the beach, and by car is 10 minutes or so. It has the only entrance to Cabo Blanco national park, as well as a few small hotels and restaurants.

Santa Teresa / Malpais

Santa Teresa, a beach town directly west of Montezuma, is about three times larger. This town is one of Costa Rica’s top surf destinations, and is loved by sunset watchers. It has many high end beachfront villa rentals, over 100 small hotels, and the best array of restaurants of any beach town in the country.
