Romelia Wildlife Refuge
Also known as Playa Grande of Montezuma, Romelia Wildlife Refuge is known in spanish as “Refugio Mixto de Vida Silvestre Romelia” (RMVSR). The size of this refuge is 156.3 Hectares, or 386.4 acres, and includes the land from 50 meters behind the high tide line. This is a gorgeous beach with no development, a 30 minute walk to the north of town.

Cabuya is just to the south of Montezuma along the beach, and by car is 10 minutes or so. It has the only entrance to Cabo Blanco national park, as well as a few small hotels and restaurants.

Santa Teresa, a beach town directly west of Montezuma, is about three times larger. This town is one of Costa Rica’s top surf destinations, and is loved by sunset watchers.
