Surfing in Playa Negra:

Though Playa Negra is a great surfing location for experienced surfers, beginners can also find a perfect break and try their skills on a smaller day. Throughout the year, the consistent waves attract pro surfers regularly but it is recommended to avoid the area during low tide. This beach is considered by many surfers to be one of the top spots in Costa Rica. Playa Negra has a rock reef bottom with good right-hand barrels and a well defined channel for paddling out.

Within five minutes drive destination you will find Playa Avellans which caters to many surfing abilities. Beginners and a bit advanced surfers can enjoy surfing the right and lefts near the shore with a long board. More advanced surfers can go to the Avellanas Rivermouth to surf and A-frame break with long barrels on both sides. Playa Negra is also close enough to Tamarindo to hit all of the famous spots including Witches Rock, with long lefts and rights that are easy to surf.
